A Sacred Ritual of Connection

In Bali, the placenta holds immense significance, revered as "Ari-Ari." It's believed to encapsulate the essence of a child's guardian angel, a lifelong companion. With meticulous care, the Balinese wrap the placenta in cloth and place it within a coconut, symbolizing protection.

The act of burying the placenta carries deep meaning in Balinese culture. It acts as a ceremonial link, connecting the child not just to their physical being but also to their ancestral lineage and the land they belong to. Through this ritual, they honor the profound bond between the newborn and their heritage, recognizing the continuity of life from past to present.

While this practice of placenta burial is not exclusive to Bali, it echoes across various cultures, highlighting the enduring connection between infants and their origins. To the Balinese, the placenta transcends its biological function; it represents protection, perpetuity, and familial ties. As it finds its resting place in the earth, it becomes a vessel carrying the stories of past generations into the unknown territories of the future, cradled tenderly within the protective shell of the coconut.
